How To Install Shower Base Correctly For Long Service Life

Correct shower base installation is the difference between a shower tray that performs for a decade and one that cracks, leaks or drains poorly within a year. Most warranty claims we receive from distributors and project contractors trace back not to the product itself, but to installation shortcuts: a hollow unsupported base, a missing waterproofing layer, or a drain set at the wrong height. This guide walks through the professional installation sequence for acrylic and ABS shower bases, from subfloor preparation to final waterproofing, so your crews can deliver a long-lasting walk-in shower base on every project.

Preparing the Subfloor and Drain Rough-In

Before the shower base arrives on site, verify three things:

  • Level, sound subfloor. The floor must be structurally sound and flat within a few millimeters. Concrete slabs should be cured; wooden floors must be reinforced with proper joist spacing.
  • Drain position matched to the tray. The waste outlet center must align with the drain hole of the shower base. Mark the drain center from the actual product, not from drawings — site tolerances accumulate.
  • Correct drain height. The top of the drain flange should sit slightly below the finished surface of the tray's sloped area, so water flows to the outlet without pooling.

Acrylic and ABS shower bases have integrated slopes molded into the tray, so unlike tiled shower floors, the contractor's job is to support the tray fully — not to create the slope.

Building a Proper Shower Base Mortar Bed

The single most important step in shower base installation is full under-tray support. A shower base mortar bed — typically a mix of sand and cement, or a packaged floor mud — spreads under the entire footprint of the tray.

The recommended procedure:

  1. Mix the mortar to a damp, workable consistency — it should hold a shape when squeezed but not be soupy.
  2. Spread the mortar over the tray footprint to a thickness of roughly 20–40 mm, slightly higher at the edges to allow for compression.
  3. Place a plastic sheet or use a mortar that will not bond to the underside of an acrylic tray, depending on the manufacturer's instruction.
  4. Set the shower base into the mortar, press down firmly and evenly, and check level in both directions with a spirit level. The tray surface itself must be level even though the molded slope handles drainage.
  5. Confirm the drain aligns, then let the mortar cure fully before any foot traffic.

Why it matters: an unsupported tray flexes under load. Repeated flexing works the seal at the drain and the wall joints, which is the root cause of most leaks. A full mortar bed distributes the weight of the user and the water load across the whole floor.

Waterproofing the Shower Base Zone

A waterproofing shower base detail is mandatory in wet-room and multi-story construction, and good practice everywhere else:

  • Apply a liquid-applied or sheet waterproofing membrane across the bathroom floor, lapping up the walls at least 100–150 mm and integrating with the tray's waterproof flange or tile flange where provided.
  • Seal the joint between the tray perimeter and the wall with a flexible, mold-resistant sanitary silicone — never rigid grout or cement, which cracks with building movement.
  • Flood test the assembly before tiling or closing walls: plug the drain, fill to the tray edge, and hold for 24 hours. A drop in water level means the leak must be found before finishes go in.

Skipping the flood test to save a day is the most expensive shortcut in bathroom construction.

Setting the Drain and Final Sealing

Once the mortar has cured and waterproofing is complete:

  • Install the waste fitting with the gasket system specified by the tray manufacturer, hand-tight plus the recommended quarter turn.
  • Apply a continuous bead of sanitary silicone around the drain flange on top of the tray.
  • For a walk-in shower base with glass screens, fix the glass channel or U-profile onto silicone, not directly onto the tray surface.
  • Avoid walking on the tray or dropping tools on it during the remaining fit-out; protect the surface with cardboard until handover.

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid

MistakeConsequencePrevention
Tray set on foam or loose debrisCracking, drain leaksFull mortar bed support
Rigid perimeter sealingHairline cracks at wall jointFlexible sanitary silicone
No flood testHidden leaks discovered after handover24-hour test before tiling
Drain misaligned to tray holeForced pipework, stress on flangeMark drain from actual product
Screws or nails penetrating trayPoint-load cracksMechanical fix only to walls, never the tray

Summary

  • Full mortar bed support under the entire tray is the foundation of durable shower base installation.
  • Waterproofing the floor and wall junction, plus a flexible silicone perimeter joint, prevents hidden leaks.
  • Always flood test for 24 hours before tiles and walls are closed.
  • Level the tray in both directions; the molded slope handles drainage, so the tray itself must sit level.
  • Never fasten anything through the tray surface or support it on loose debris.
